Did you know it is International Masturbation Month this month?
Has the menopause changed your solo sex habits?
It can feel like there is a “day” or “month” for everything these days, but actually, this is one we think does an important job of re-writing the narrative around solo pleasure.
As sexologists, we often see people struggling with changes in their sexual function and looking to us for some help.
Solo sex (and we use these words because the word “masturbation” can have more negative religious and cultural significance for some) has always been a good place to start when trying to understand the cause of a change in your sexual function.
Partnered sex is, quite simply, more complicated.
It requires us to co-ordinate our needs with those of our partner, and to create something together that somehow suits us both. As we age, our needs can become quite different, as our partners may need more (or less) stimulation than us, more (or less) time to reach climax, and so on.
If sex has changed, we will often ask you: what is happening on your own?
It helps us remove the complication of having to consider a partner, and also helps to remove the impact of things like performance anxiety, distraction, and fear of pain (or causing your partner pain) with penetration.
It is also often the place we start in helping you to remap your body, what touch you need and like, and helping you to focus in on that touch to help amplify your awareness of what you are feeling. It can also sometimes help you experience your body as a place to feel safe and pleasurable sensation again, after a period where things have felt different, and your body may have felt less safe.
If you are struggling to connect with your sexual interest, or have noticed things don’t work quite like they did…solo sex is a great place to start.
Throughout this website, we use the term women when describing people who experience hormonal symptoms. However, we acknowledge not only those who identify as women require access to menopause and hormone health information. For example, some trans men, non-binary people, intersex people or people with variations in sex characteristics may also experience menopausal symptoms and PMS/PME or PMDD, and we warmly welcome everyone who needs this support in our clinic.
