Your menopause consultation will be an in depth look at your symptoms, lifestyle and goals. To get the most out of your 50 minutes, there are some things you can do to prepare. Both our doctors are highly trained in menopause and sexology, and will be able to ask you the right questions to produce the plan that you need.
Here are our top tips:
It is our job to help you to understand what is happening to you. We don’t bombard you with lots of information beforehand as we will give you all the specific information relevant to you during our consultation. Once we have the full picture, we will offer several leaflets to be read on the portal. We only add leaflets that are relevant to you or that we have decided together would be good for you to read. All of our leaflets have been written by the doctors and are up to date, evidence based and are constantly updated when new information comes out.
Once you have booked an appointment you will receive an email with three questions to answer beforehand. Have a good think about your answers. It’s so helpful if we can start the consultation with an idea of what’s bothering you and how you want to be helped. What will be a good outcome for you and what needs to happen for you to feel that it’s been a success! Knowing your expectations and concerns helps us to address your solutions. The hallmarks of a great consultation and not doctor led but patient led.
As we don’t have access to your GP records, it’s helpful if you could find out when you last had certain tests. This should be straightforward with online access to your GP records or may involve a quick phone call with your GP surgery. The important test results that we need are any recent blood tests within the last six months, mammograms, smear tests, pelvic ultrasound scans and any bone scans. You can upload any documents you may have to the portal before the consultation.
Your medical history and family history is essential if we are to put together the best treatment plan for you. We will ask you about this as well and it may be worth asking your family if there is any history that may be relevant especially breast cancer. We use the information from the tests you tell us you have had, your medical history and family history to make a timeline so you can see your own menopause journey clearly.
We will send you a symptom checker with your welcome email, to fill in before the consultation. Every woman is unique and there are so many symptoms that you might be feeling. Sometimes, you may not realise that it’s even connected to the menopause. The asymptom checker is a comprehensive way to make sure we know how you are feeling so we can help you address every symptom and get you back to feeling more like yourself.
Some people find this awkward but both doctors are trained in sexology and have the expertise to help you. The menopause can have all kinds of impact on your sex life, both physical and mental, and these problems are really common. You don’t just have to mention if it’s painful; we want to set a high bar for your sexual wellness including libido and enjoyment. We will ask you about these in the consultation and there’s absolutely no pressure to discuss it if you don’t want to. However, don’t be afraid. There is nothing we haven’t heard before and this may be the only time that anyone asks you about this.
Your initial 50-minute consultation includes a 15 minute follow up call about a month later to see how you are doing. We’ll discuss how you are getting on with the treatment plan, whether that included HRT or not, and discuss any results. At this point some people will then be managed by their GP, but if you wish to have further follow up consultations with us then we will be very happy to see you. These can be booked through our website.
If you stay with us and if we continue to prescribe you HRT we advise that you at least have an annual review to make sure you are getting on well with your treatment. We have extensive experience in individualising and adjusting the treatment and managing any problems that you may have or that your GP may not be able to help you with.
Taking some time to gather relevant information and answer our questions will vastly improve your experience. It means you’ll have more time to ask us questions and get as much information and advice from us as you can when we have our consultation.
We hope these tips have helped and look forward to meeting you soon.
Throughout this website, we use the term women when describing people who experience hormonal symptoms. However, we acknowledge not only those who identify as women require access to menopause and hormone health information. For example, some trans men, non-binary people, intersex people or people with variations in sex characteristics may also experience menopausal symptoms and PMS/PME or PMDD, and we warmly welcome everyone who needs this support in our clinic.
